Sickle Cell Awareness Initiative

“It is estimated that more than 300,000 babies are born with severe forms of hemoglobinopathies worldwide each year. While 75 percent of all patients with SCD live in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria alone accounts for more than 100,000 new births every year.”

1 in every 365 African Americans are living with sickle cell anemia and 1 in 13 children are born with the sickle cell trait.

Two sets of uncomfortable statistics, occurring on opposite sides of the globe.

For this reason, we would like to connect the two realities and host a Sickle Cell Awareness 5K and Cookout to bring awareness to these statistics, celebrate those who have overcome sickle cell anemia, and support those who need encouragement.

Join us at Winton Woods Park at Lady Bug Landing Shelter

Saturday September 30th at 8: 00 am – 3:00 pm to :

-Learn about Sickle Anemia screening and treatment from community organizations at the mini resource fair.

-Eat good and engage in family activities at the after run cookout.

-And walk, jog or run for a good cause!

Enjoy friendly competition??

There will be a 5k competition for those interested in channeling into their competitive side. The top 10 runners with the fastest scores will be awarded and recognized at the end of the session!

Proceeds will go to the work of the organization, involving the overtime establishment of a sickle cell public health initiative starting in Cincinnati; but continuing in Nigeria!
